To Greece I Go!

Today is a big day for me. You see, I travel alone quite often, but this is my first experience traveling alone overseas. I’ve also never visited Greece, which is beyond a dream and very exciting! I’m a little nervous. 
I was supposed to visit Scotland. In 2020. After I graduated with my doctorate. As we all know, 2020 was a stinker of a year. Aside from COVID, there was no graduation and no travel.
Here we are in 2021.
I stressed about losing the money I spent on my plane ticket, and I naively believed the worst of COVID would be behind the world, but alas, this was not the case. I also made the assumption that since I was vaccinated I’d be able to keep my Scotland plans. Alas, that was also not the case.
So in June 2021, knowing Greece had fewer travel restrictions, I made the switch. Instead of hiking and exploring the Highlands, I’ll be hiking and exploring ancient sites. Oh, and island hopping on the Aegean Sea. That’s Uh-jee-uhn, as a good friend of mine so accurately pronounced.
I love Ancient Greek history. I love reading about the culture, the people, and the ancient gods and goddesss. I love the old buildings and monuments. And the food! Oh, I cannot wait to taste the food and drink the wine.

A Very Long Day

Today I left Paros. The ferry was scheduled to leave at 11:25 a.m. so I arrived at the port around 10:00. I have such a fear of being late and missing things now. Our ferry didn’t arrive until 1:00. It was wretched hot, and it made me so sleepy. I also had a headache hangover from Monday. Thankfully, I was smart enough to book a nice seat for the ride. I drank an Americano and promptly took a nap. The ride to Santorini was only a couple of hours. My Air BnB host arranged transportation for me. I’ll say it again, it is worth it to book a private car. Rousa snaked her way around the dozens of cars and buses at the port and we drove up, up, up the volcano. Did you know Santorini is part of an extinct volcano? I’ll show you pictures tomorrow when I’m in Fira, but it’s pretty amazing. All of the towns on the west side of the island sit atop the volcano. Where Are the Washcloths?

This morning I mastered the alarm clock and woke up on time to meet Leonidas, who took me to Port Piraeus at 6:30 a.m. The line to get on the ferry was obscene. I’m thankful for the advice my cousin gave me to reserve a seat. People arrive early to get a seat with a table. My seat was like a recliner, which suited me well for the journey.  It was a 4 hour ferry ride from Athens to Paros. I worked a little and read some of my book,  Nonviolent Communication .   Upon arrival to  Paros , I bought a huge bottle of water because  you cannot drink enough water out here. And the water is cheap cheap!! I then bought my bus ticket to take me to  Piso Livadi . Paros comprises of several small towns. The activities you’re interested in might determine where you stay. I Missed the Bus (cue Kris Kross)

Warning: Colorful language You know the feeling. You open your eyes, look out the window, and say, “That’s too much sun.” I sent a “fuck,” out into the universe when I saw the time was 8:30 a.m. My bus left for Delphi at 8:30. Money down the drain. No Oracle of Delphi. I set two alarms. I remember hitting my phone, but I must’ve turned that one off. I didn’t remember the second alarm sounding. I would later find out it’s because I didn’t set it for a.m. Again, shiiiiiiitttt! Swear I can’t go on vacation without some b.s. It never fails. I immediately went into problem-solving mode and then realized it would be to my benefit to drink some coffee and eat breakfast before I made any irrational decisions. I couldn’t get bent out of shape. After my initial shock and disappointment, I remembered where I was. Greece. How could I be grumpy for too long?
